Typical lithium minerals are Spodumene (containing 5.80%-8.10% Li2O), Lepidolite (containing 3.20%-6.45% Li2O), Amblygonite(containing Li2O 7.10%-10.10%), Petalite(also called castorite, containing 2.90%-4.80% Li2O), and Zinnwaldite(containing Li2O 1.10%-5.00%). The more common ones are Spodumene and Lepidolite.

Lithium has many uses:

  • Medicines
  • Heat resistant glass & ceramics.
  • Flux additives for iron, steel & aluminum
  • Air purification filtering
  • Military applications
  • Lithium-ion batteries

Uses for lithium have expanded throughout history

  • 1800: first discovered in Uto Sweden
  • 1923: first commercial production
  • 1939: first used extensively in aircraft engine lubricants
  • 1949: first used by the pharmaceutical industry
  • 1950s: used as a solid fusion fuel in hydrogen reactions
  • 1990s: increased use in smelting of glass & metals
  • 2000s: used in lithium-iron batteries

World demand for lithium is skyrocketing

  • 2021- 540,000 Metric tons
  • 2025 (projected) – 1,500,000 Metric tons
  • 2030 (projected) – 3,000,000+ Metric tons

Lithium in Ethiopia

Despite a long mining history, dating back more than a millennium, commercial and large scale mining is still in its early stages in Ethiopia. The mining industry is a sector with significant potential for the economy.

The presence of lithium mineral deposits in Ethiopia has been documented since the 1930s and in the 1980s geologists confirmed significant deposits of hard rock lithium along with tantalum, niobium and cesium in the Oromia region – home of the famous Kenticha Mine. Today Ethiopia is the sixth largest exporter of tantalum in the world and is poised to enter the ever expanding lithium market. With the demand for lithium expected to triple by 2030 producers of all sorts of products like lithium batteries, glass, ceramics, lubricants and metal flux additives will need new sources.

Ethiopia has the resources and is ready to fill the world’s demand!

Ethiopia’s virtually untapped, diverse and vast mineral resources offer huge potential opportunities for exploration and development. The legal and fiscal environment instituted by the government permits a free market-driven economy allowing both foreign and local companies to participate in the mining development of the country, in a transparent manner that would help boost the economy of the country.

About us

Our region is the host for a long and linear belt of this rare resource which until recently has been left untouched and untapped, if you are looking for a reliable source that can fulfill any need there is no reason to look further – Ethiopian Lithium Exporters was formed to meet all of your needs.

With the rapid rise in lithium demand the Ethiopian government is encouraging our group to expand operations and has guaranteed all necessary permits and licenses. Our group of Oromia land owners and lithium miners are already capable of extracting and shipping 36,000 metric tons per month of lithium bearing rock with a rating of 6% LCE.

Our partners are set to triple their production to meet any demand, and many other landowners with similar capacity are waiting to join our group.

We know the region, have the transportation, and the labor to ship as much hard rock lithium to satisfy any demand and are ready to work with all serious buyers.
